Trouble under Linux with Java Plug-in 1.6 in Firefox

Post by Chris78 »

Hi!

We experience very strange behavior using JFileupload under Linux. We use Firefox 3 which ships with Java(TM) Plug-in 1.6.0_02-b05.

Opening our intranet page that contains the applet, we cannot drag and drop files into the applet (forbidden-sign appears at the cursor). Using the select button however works fine.

Now the real strange part:
Opening a second tab within Firefox and loading the same page with the applet there too, will enable one of the applets and drag and drop will work. But if I drag a file into the applet on the second tab the upload will be started in the applet on the first tab.

Using Firefox 2 (which runs a 1.5-Java Plug-in by default) seemed to work properly. Then configured Firefox 2 to use the 1.6-Version of the Java Plug-in and the above trouble was back again.

So it's probably a compatibility problem with the Java 1.6 plug-in under Linux.

Maybe it's worth mentioning that we load the applet on demand via XMLHttpRequest (Ajax). I will check out if the behavior changes, if we load the applet directly during page load.

I hope we'll get this to work. If you need any traces from the console, please let me know.

Regards,
Chris

Hi!

The same trouble can be experienced with your Demo-page, so loading the applet via Ajax is not necessary to reproduce the problem.

From a Firefox with Java 1.6-plug-in under Linux try the following:
* start Firefox
* open you Demo Page for JFileupload
* try drag&drop (forbidden sign appears. btw: I use to drag files from Konqueror)
* now open a new tab within your Firefox and load the same page again there
* Drag a file into the applet on the second tab
* the applet accepts the file, but the upload starts in the applet on the first tab

Regards,
Chris

Thanks for the report. It looks like a bug with FireFox/Java/Linux because we don't get such issue under Windows. You made the test under Ubuntu ? With KDE ?

Hi!

We were using Suse Linux (as far as I know 10.3) with KDE.

Hi again!

My colleague uses Suse Linux 11.0 with KDE and experiences the same problems with Firefox 2 and 3 when using the 1.6 version of the Java browser-plug-in.

I've made a test under the following Linux configuration and Drag&Drop worked fine:
- Ubuntu Desktop 8.0.4 (Gnome)
- FireFox 3.0.1
- JRE 1.6.0_07
- JFileUpload 2.2 Beta

I will try to download OpenSuse (more than 4GB).

Hi!

Yesterday I installed "andLinux" on my private windows machine at home. "andLinux" is based on Ubuntu. Using Firefox 3.01 with JRE 1.6 again the applet on the demo page refused to let me drop a file on it (dragging from Konqueror).

A colleague tried it from his notebook with a fresh Ubuntu installation, KDE, Firefox 3.01 and JRE 1.6 and again the same.

Have you tried to reproduce that behavior with KDE instead of Gnome yet?

No, but I will do because it might be a problem with KDE.
